Even if you live in town, a fox floor on your chicken coop can still provide valuable protection for your chickens. Urban areas often have wildlife, including foxes, cats, and dogs, that may pose a threat to your flock, especially at night. A fox floor acts as an additional layer of security by preventing these animals from digging underneath the coop to access your chickens. This helps ensure the safety of your birds, reducing the risk of predators getting in and causing harm. Additionally, it offers peace of mind knowing that your chickens are protected, even in a town setting where urban wildlife can still be a concern.
At Albany Chicken Tractors, we operate on a "first in, first out" ordering system to ensure fair and efficient processing of all orders. Once you receive your quote, you can secure your place in the production queue by submitting the deposit. Before we begin construction on your chicken coop, we will reach out to confirm the start date and provide you with an estimated timeline. This allows you to plan ahead and gives you a clear understanding of when to expect the commencement of your project.
Given the custom nature of our chicken coops and tractors, each order is uniquely crafted, built by hand, and delivered to meet your specific requirements. We are actively working towards having the full range of our products on display at Great Southern Stock Feeds for your convenience. In the meantime, they do carry a selection of our products, allowing you to see the quality firsthand.
This question does not have a simple, one-size-fits-all answer, as individuals have varying goals, preferences, and reasons for keeping chickens. For those seeking to raise chickens primarily as pets, with the added benefit of fresh eggs, starting with three chickens is a practical and sensible choice. This setup ensures that, in the event of an unfortunate loss, the remaining chickens will still have companions, preserving their social structure and well-being.
The size of the chicken coop or tractor you should get depends on several factors, such as how many chickens you have, the size of the chickens, the type of environment you're keeping them in, and whether or not they are free-ranging.
Minimum Space per Chicken:
Indoors (Coop): We use between 15cm - 30cm per chicken of Roost space.
Outdoors (Run): 1 square meter per chicken.
For example,
If you have 4 standard size chickens and you cannot let them free-range then a size 4 would be suitable.
If you have 4 standard size chickens and you let them free-range everyday then a size 1 would be suitable.
If you have 4 standard size chickens and you let them free-range everyday but have to leave them for weekend or you go on holiday. Then a size 2 or size 3 would be more suitable.
A chicken tractor offers several advantages over a stationary chicken coop, especially if you want more mobility and flexibility in managing your flock. Here are some reasons why you might choose a chicken tractor:
Chicken tractors can be moved around your yard or garden, allowing chickens to graze on fresh grass, weeds, and pests (like insects, grubs, and worms). This can help naturally fertilize your lawn or garden while controlling pests.
By moving the tractor regularly, chickens have access to fresh ground, reducing the buildup of manure in one spot. This helps avoid parasites and diseases that can develop in confined spaces. The constant rotation gives them a clean, new area to scratch and forage.
A stationary coop can cause significant damage to your lawn due to constant chicken activity in the same area. A chicken tractor can be shifted regularly, preventing overgrazing and allowing the land to recover.
If you're working with limited space, a chicken tractor can be an efficient way to provide your chickens with enough room to roam without taking up too much area. By moving it around, you can maintain a balance of space and comfort for your flock.
Since you move the tractor, the waste also gets spread out over the ground, reducing the accumulation of manure in one location.
Chicken tractors are highly portable, allowing you to move them to different areas of your property. This flexibility is ideal for rotating the chickens through different areas of your garden or yard, giving you the freedom to control where they go.
For people who have smaller flocks (e.g., 2 to 6 chickens), a chicken tractor can be an ideal solution, providing the necessary space without requiring a large permanent structure.
A chicken tractor can be more secure against predators. Since it's often built with secure wire mesh and raised off the ground, it can offer protection from many common threats like cats, dogs, foxes, and birds of prey.
In urban or suburban areas where zoning or regulations might limit the size of structures, a chicken tractor can be a good option because it can be smaller, allowing you to meet local requirements more easily.
A chicken tractor is an excellent choice for people who want a portable and efficient way to raise chickens while promoting healthy foraging and natural land management. The decision between a chicken tractor and a stationary coop ultimately depends on your flock size, available space, and preferences for mobility.
The choice of chicken breed ultimately depends on your personal preferences and goals. If you're uncertain, a local poultry club can be an excellent starting point for guidance. Once you've selected the breed—or breeds—that best suit your needs, you can locate reputable breeders. When purchasing your chickens, the breeder should be well-equipped to address any questions or concerns you might have. Should you encounter any difficulties, we are also available to offer further assistance.
